Discrimination against Mewati Farmers in Land Acquisition by Haryana Govt

Saturday 4 February 2012, by anhad e-admin

Press Release

[3 February 2012]

When the process of land acquisition was initiated (issued notice u//s 4 in March 2008) the farmers in Mewat vehemently opposed it because the land under question was agricultural land the only source of their livelihood. A memorandum was submitted to Hon’ able Governor Haryana however no positive response was received. Govt. without conceding their agitation continued with the process of acquisition and subsequently issued notice u/s 6 in 2009 and in May 2010 declared a very low rate of compensation i.e. 16 lakhs per hectare.

The Haryana govt forcefully acquired their entire agricultural land at a very low compensation rate of Rs. 16 lakhs. In comparison the adjoining villages in district, Gurgoan have been given compensation of 55 lakh per hectare. The compensation rate for this land is kept @ Rs.16 lakhs per hectare, where as the compensation rate of land acquisition of nearby villages Jkhorpur .in block Sohna of district Gurgaon has been kept as high as Rs 55 lakhs per hectare, in another adjoining district Faridabad , similar compensation rate of Rs 16 lakhs per hectare was fixed which however on their constant struggle increased to Rs. 46 lakhs per hectare however in the case of Mewati villages none of this kind of relief has been provided.

The farmers of nine villagers Namely (i) Rojka meo(ii) Kedli kankar (iii) Rewason (iv) Meharola (v) Kenversika (vi) Bedekali (vii) Dhirdika (viiii) Rupahari ix)Behadri of Block Nuh , District Mewat (Haryana) have been agitating continuously but no one from the government has bothered to even talk to them.

The entire highly valuable agricultural land of about 1600 hectare was acquired by Haryana govt. @ Rs 16 lakhs per hectare compensation in September –October 2010. Approx 116 acres of Panchayat land was also acquired, literally making the villagers prisoners with no possibility of any expansion of schools, grazing land, medical facilities and even grave yards in future.

Immediately after the acquisition of the land of the 9 Mewati villages Haryana govt announced new policies of higher compensation rates but Mewati farmers have not benefited from any of such policies.

The farmers have been peacefully opposing the injustice. A Dharna was organised in Haryana from Feb 4 to May 6, 2011 about acquisition of land in Nuh. A memorandum was given to the Hon’ble Governor of April 7, 2011 and Chief Minister on May 23, 2011. There has been no response, the farmers started a Dharna in the vicinity of the said land near village Rewasan from May 24, 2011 which is continuing till date.

Memorandums have been sent to the President and the Prime Minister.

We demand:

  • Rate of Land acquisition to be at par with rate of acquisition in adjoining villages of Gurgaon district.
  • Provision of 500 yards of developed land to every farmer’s family from his/ her acquired land
  • Provide govt job to one person from the family from whom land is acquired
  • Give preference in jobs in the IMT units from families of farmers whose land is acquired
  • Make provisions of providing essential community amenities like school, medical facility, land for grazing animals, chaupals, aanganwadis and qabristan.
